Lightning Detection is important as fatalities caused by lightning strikes occurs annually in many countries especially countries within the tropical regions. Singapore has one of the highest lightning occurrences in the world, experiencing on average 168 thunderstorms days per year accordingly to the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) website. Singapore’s closest neighbour, Malaysia also experiences 180 to 260 thunderstorms per year which is the third highest in the world. With this high thunderstorm frequency, the chances of being hit by lightning are high.

There are two types of Lighting strikes produced by a thunder-storms, cloud to ground and cloud to cloud, also known as heat lightning. For any user on the ground, the cloud to ground strike is the most dangerous.

To ensure work place safety and prevent lightning threats, lightning detection systems are essential as cloud to ground lightning poses a serious threat to lives and properties.

SkyScan USA is a world leader in lightning detection systems which offer a series of both portable and fixed lightning detection instruments that detects cloud to ground lighting and informs you whether its safe to resume work in the area. It allows you to detect and monitor the storms’ approach and are accurate to within 1-2 km 97% of the time. This ensures maximum protection from dangerous storms and lightning activities.

Skyscan Lighting detectors uses the latest miniature electronic technology to detect electromagnetic (EM) signature of the lightning strikes in thunderstorms, then ranges and tracks the storm.

Thunderstorms are rapidly changing weather phenomena that can develop quickly, even directly overhead. Lightning detectors cannot predict where a thunderstorm may form, or where the lightning strikes from any storm may occur. Localised lightning detector should always be used in conjunction with information from your local weather stations. Common sense and extreme caution should always be used when confronting lightning and thunderstorm activity. Companies should develop it’s own risk assessment and standard operation procedures for their workers whom during daily operation are exposed to potential lightning strikes. Make sure there is enough time for workers to evacuate to safety shelters by selecting the distance range where the lightning strikes to alert and activate the Standard Operation Procedure for managing lightning risk.

Skyscan lightning detectors are currently used in military training, golf courses and constructions sites. They are currently used by enterprises and organisations like WOH HUP, Shell Jurong island and Ssangyong-Hyundai etc.
